(i) Conditions predisposing to hyperglycemia: hemochromatosis (n = 3), chronic pancreatitis (n = 2), carcinoma of pancreas (n = 1), total parenteral nutrition (n = 6), corticosteroid (n = 179), and hydrochlorothiazide therapy (n = 10). (ii) Use of oral hypoglycemic medication or insulin, random glucose greater than200 mg/dL, fasting glucose greater than140 mg/dL on two occasions, or attending an endocrine clinic for diabetes.
(iii) Diabetics excluded from final analysis (% = patients in [iii] divided by [i] × 100).
