Top 5 Supplements to Support Your Liver

Milk Thistle

Milk ThistleMilk Thistle is the #1 recommended natural herb for liver health, confirmed by hundreds of clinical studies to protect the liver against virtually all types of damage. Many years of research shows the active flavanoid-lignan (flavanolignan) group of constituents, called silymarin, contained only in the seed shell has liver-protective and regenerative properties, as well as antioxidant effects. The liver protective effects were known and written about in ancient times, leading to the active chemical, pharmacological, and safety research beginning in Germany in the 1950s. Clinical use for a variety of liver ailments, such as hepatitis, has also prospered throughout many parts of the world. To learn more about the many benefits of milk thistle, click here.

If you are going to purchase milk thistle, a standardized milk thistle is recommended so you are sure to get the same amount of the active, beneficial ingredient in each dose. Milk thistle can also be combined with additional herbs such as artichoke (shown to support liver and gall bladder function through the removal of toxins and maintaining healthy bile production) and turmeric (which can help protect the liver from damaging free radicals and promote a health inflammatory response) to provide even more liver protection and support than standardized milk thistle alone.

Standardized milk thistle is inexpensive and has some benefits, but has ONE major shortcoming -  its active ingredients are not absorbed easily by the body. This would require you to ingest large amounts to experience beneficial effects, which is an impractical option. Through research, we have found a patented milk thistle formula that resolves this ONE issue. The patented formula is proven by science to be up to 10 times more absorbable and is found in Maximum Milk Thistle® and the more powerful version UltraThistle®.

Alpha Lipoic Acid

Alpha R-Lipoic Acid Alpha-lipoic acid is an antioxidant that is made by the body and is found in every cell, where it helps turn glucose into energy. Antioxidants attack "free radicals," which cause harmful chemical reactions that can damage cells in the body, making it harder for the body to fight off infections. They also damage organs and tissues.

Dr. Lester Packer, Research Director of the leading antioxidant research center at the University of California at Berkley, and considered the world's foremost antioxidant research scientist, describes Lipoic Acid in his book The Antioxidant Miracle. Dr. Packer states, "Lipoic Acid is a superantioxidant that breaks many of the rules of antioxidant behavior. If I were to invent an ideal antioxidant, it would closely resemble Lipoic Acid, which does everything an antioxidant should do and more."

Other antioxidants work only in water (such as vitamin C) or fatty tissues (such as vitamin E), but alpha-lipoic acid is both fat- and water-soluble. That means it can work throughout the body and why it is known as the “universal antioxidant.” Antioxidants in the body are used up as they attack free radicals, but evidence suggests alpha-lipoic acid may help regenerate these other antioxidants and make them active again.

Alpha-Lipoic Acid exists in three forms: Alpha R-Lipoic Acid, Alpha S-Lipoic Acid and Alpha RS-Lipoic Acid. Some facts about these forms, include:

  • Alpha S-Lipoic Acid and Alpha RS-Lipoic Acid are synthetics that were created by chemical synthesis in the 1950s and are more commonly known and sold as Alpha Lipoic Acid.
  • Alpha R-Lipoic Acid is the natural, "fully active" form of Lipoic Acid, the only version that exists in nature, produced in the body and synthesized by both plants and animals.

Research indicates that Alpha R-Lipoic Acid is the proper, structural fit for membrane receptors and enzymes; therefore, it is metabolized more efficiently and with much greater potency than the synthetic "unnatural forms."

N-Acetyl L-Cysteine

N-Acetyl L-Cysteine N-Acetyl L-Cysteine (NAC) is a precursor to glutathione, the body's principal antioxidant that neutralizes free radicals and detoxifies harmful substances. A powerful antioxidant found within every cell in your body, glutathione has many supportive functions. One of glutathione’s best-known roles is to defend the cell it inhabits against damage from wastes and toxins. Since the hepatic cells of those with chronic liver disease are consistently stressed as they deflect poisons, the cells’ quantity of glutathione becomes even more important. Even used as an emergency medicine tactic, one of glutathione’s building blocks has been extensively revered for protecting the liver from damaging toxins.

Clinical studies have documented that glutathione is essential for detoxification and that its depletion is associated with increased risks of toxicity and chronic disease. As this antioxidant is depleted, the body has fewer resources to protect itself from oxidation – a process defined by unstable oxygen molecules damaging cell membranes. Needed by other antioxidants to scavenge and neutralize free radicals, glutathione is the body’s primary defender against oxidative stress. Many experts believe that a deficiency of hepatic glutathione is one of the leading contributors to the progression of liver disease.
